The Secret Power of Yoga: A Woman's Guide to the Heart and Spirit of the Yoga Sutras by Nischala Joy Devi
This is not a book that you will sit down and read cover to cover. Ideally this book will live on your bedside table for the rest of your life, and you'll use it for teaching and life inspiration as the years go on.
For this training, there will be assigned questions on a selection of the sutras. Please feel free to go to that section to see the ones that are assigned. You can focus on those ones for now, but eventually you should definitely read it all.
If there is ONE BOOK that will be a guide for your yogic lifestyle, this is it!
Happiness Now - Robert Holden, Ph.D
Read this book in its entirety and take notes throughout. There will be assignment questions to answer inside the training content. Please thoughtfully answer each question, and when you're finished all of them, send them to me via email.
This book was a life saver for me! Even though this isn't technically a yoga book, it really is. I hope you enjoy it and that you want to share it with family and friends!
Yoga Anatomy - Leslie Kaminoff and Amy Matthews
For reference. When we cover Asana we will use this book for reference, as well as during the Anatomy & Physiology section.
I studied anatomy with Leslie Kaminoff and many of my teaching techniques and references come from him. I truly enjoy how he brings the world of yoga philosophy together with yoga anatomy. It creates a cohesive experience that makes sense, and makes it easier to understand the principles of anatomy that are important for yoga teachers to know.
The Heart of Yoga - T.K.V. Desikachar
This book is referenced throughout the training. There aren't any specific assignments on this book, but please do read up until the start of the Yoga Sutras at the back of the book, and let me know once you've completed the book.
This is the book I recommend to my students who want to know more about yoga. If I teach a class and mention the eight limbs of yoga and they wonder what the heck I am talking about, I recommend they read this! It's a wonderful and complete guide to yoga and developing a personal practice.
*Keep a journal to take notes as you read each book.
